Beneath the expected celebration is a story no one has told yet.

01The premise
01 / THE PREMISE

The other side of the story.

A traditional wedding destination offered an unexpected opportunity beneath the surface.

The proposal reimagines the basement of Shepstone Gardens as a hidden speakeasy. Rather than changing the building’s structure, the design works with its existing character to create a different kind of gathering place.

02 / THE MOOD

A little mystery. A little jazz.

The interior translates the unpredictable energy of jazz into a spatial mood.

↗ Concept interpretation / warmth, movement and mood
✳

Warm colour, layered lighting, pattern and richer textures transform the existing basement. Stone, timber and other retained materials form a tactile foundation for the new atmosphere.

Follow the music.

The design unfolds through a sequence of intimate, atmospheric areas.

A lounge, vinyl display and the striking wood-burn signage each contribute to the distinct character of the basement.

More than meets the eye.
